I'm new to 'rose gardening' and have heard that by putting garlic around your roses will help deter aphids. I would like to try this but I wonder if someone can please tell me how many cloves should I use? how deep do I insert them and how close to the stem? Do I remove the skin off the cloves? Thanks. Oh and how long do you leave them there for. Do you need to replace with fresh cloves?

You might want to have a look at this page. It offers other options as well. Most of the advice I have read are similar - i.e. spray on. Oh, an added bonus is that it will keep the hauntings down.

Hi Weekend Gardener - Thanks very much for these wonderful tips. I bookmarked that page and will be making some of the garlic spray. I have 2 rose bushes one I just purchased the other day, anyway I planted a clove of garlic beside each plant. I hope it helps to keep the aphids away. I haven't seen any yet, but I want to be prepared. Thanks again for your help.
