Can Anyone please tell me if it is normal for Potatoes to produce a fruit above ground? we have a few potatoes growing in our garden and the plants have a fruit like object which is growing out of the stem, they look just like raw tomatoes when opened.

    Any help appreciated,

    From an obvious novice,

    Henry roy

It isn't at all unusual to get the occasional fruit on a potato plant, especially where different potato cultivars are grown in close proximity. These fruits are poisonous (see this link).

However, rather than disposing of them, why not let a few ripen, then plant the seed. Who knows what kind of potatoes you might get from the resulting seedlings.
