Anyone know where to get some Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon Grape Cuttings? I want to send a few cuttings to my cousin in Europe so he can try them out. I don't know the name by which they are pronounced in other than english or else I would find them over there. I know the Grenache should thrive in those growing conditions My cousin has in Southern Europe. He is Zone 9.
Both of those grape varieties are available in Europe from numerous sources. Unless you have the proper paper work (ie CFIA permits) it's illegal to ship cuttings there. A lot of the sources for the vines in North America are from European nurseries. Cheers
Yes, they're all over the place in Southern Europe. You'd have to jump through a lot of hoops/regulations to send grape cuttings into any nation that has wine as a high export/market item. Also, in Europe they have to graft their wine grapes, because of phyloxerra, so that the cuttings would die anyhow in almost any location in Europe.
Yes: Grapes 'VitisVinifera', which the grapes you mentioned earlier are , are very suc. to phyloxerra. Sure you could root them, but they would die in the field. Virtually all vineyards in Europe are grafted onto resistant rootstock, as well as California USA
So, there grape cuttings have to be bought from a nursery rather than them plant them on their own? Here in North America we can get away with planting live grape cuttings not grafted on resistant rootstocks?
Yes, you can get away with planting vinifera grapes without a rootstock but be careful if you are in a region that has phyloloxera.
How do we know who has this disease in their region? What if I used a "vinifera cutting" in Niagara or something(out of it's native Europe)...would it still get this phyloxera disease?
If I was in the eastern part of North America or in a region that has a history of grape growing it would be wise to use grafted plants, especially for large commercial plantings.
