WOW! This is really an amazing plant... :)
Hm, unfortunately I don't know this plant, but I think it's flowers are a bit similar to Gentiana algida, so maybe this one is also in the Gentianaceae family... ?...

    Fascinating thing!

No idea what it is, but opposite leaves, and five sepals / petals, hints at perhaps something in the family Caryophyllaceae.

Maybe one of the high-altitude Sedums? The ones here hotbox their flowers in the exact same way. Did you, perchance, break open one of those pods to have a look at what was being sheltered?

AHAH! Found it! Gentiana urnula or possibly another of the high-alt. Gentians. Foliage is an exact match for G. urnula, and since you never saw open flowers, it may indeed be a match on flower colour as well.

    G. aff. jingdoensis is also similar, but I feel that G. urnula is closer.
    G. depressa is another likely candidate.

    G. aff. jingdoensis looks like the best guess, thanks Lorax! But just so you know, I wasn't there. I just found the website while looking for weird plants :)

I lost perspective, guessing the plant is Saussurea.
I was once, many years ago, in Nepal and we found beatiful Gentiana, probably G. ornata in flower. Fantastic!
