Just an ordinary Acer palmatum. it is not a cultivar but the orange autumn color is quite unusual.

another specimen. this one is also just an ordinary species. but there is something different about these leaves. could anyone tell me what this is? an illness? a mutation? something else?

I'd suspect both have one or another of the selected cultivars in their parentage - the leaf shape doesn't quite match the leaves of trees you'd find in the wild in Japan. In particular, the lobing is a bit more deeply cut.

they don't look like pure-bred species. especially the second one. both of them were bought as a seedlings of non cultivar origin. it would be nice if someone would post here pictures of pure ssp. palmatum, Matsumurae and linearilobum. I'm not telling abaout those from "Maples from Japan", which I already have seen. I guess the second one may be linearilobum because of the lobing is indeed deeply cut. this pictures presents the second one plant as a seedling, then two years later, and finally during present summer. any ideas? :)

It is not a 'katsura'. all these pictures show the same plant. first was taken in 2005 while it was a seedling. picture #2 (the second one in the first row) was taken in 2007. it is the same plant. all other pictures were taken this summer. it is still the same plant. pictures from my third post represent the same plant during this autumn.
This is just an ordinary non cultivar seedling. perhaps it is mutating. or maybe it is just an illness?

Here is one of my acer palmatums. Maybe for some people it won't be the favorite, but the "father of all cultivars" have a lot of merits to deserve a place here, too. For me, is the easiest to grow and at this time, is really explendid. Here some pics taken today (before sunset).

We need to show more love for "The Mothership"! To me, the leaf on the acer palmatum is almost the perfect size and shape. It is the quintessential maple leaf. Of course there are plenty of culitvars with many other interesting qualities, but the "ordinary" acer is still one of my favorites.

I agree. Easy to find, easy to grow, inexpensive, very tolerant to different conditions (including my prunning mistakes).... and the list continues. Maybe these are some reasons for keeping its place as the principal cultivar in an 'autentic' japanese garden (according what I read in some japanese garden books).

Here are some fall colors last year of some large Acer palmatums. Even though they aren't a cultivar, they still can add a lot to a garden or yard.

Anybody ever order these from The Arbor Day Foundation? They are $10.00 each. I put in an order for two but they will not ship until November. It will be a nice late fall surprise to get these in the mail.

8th April 2021 and a very recent gift, my new Acer palmatum. Although not a cultivar, it is the parent to so many.
I am looking forward to watching this one take shape and posting updates.

21st April 2021 and my little Acer Palmatum is now producing lots of leaves. I will not be shy in posting regular updates, as I believe this maple deserves it.

Not so ordinary at all N. That's the best Acer palmatum I've ever seen.
