Hi every one, i am having a bit of difficulty identifying this tree in our garden, is there anybody who can help. I am located on the Isle of Man UK. The tree and surrounding gardens are in a 'micro climate due to its position in a valley. i have enclosed some picture to help, all feedback appreciated. many thanks Matt choco@ntlworld.com
Well, it's fairly logical: Drimys is a far more popular plant than Schima on British Isles (as far as I know). That would be my first point. Then again: these flowers are not typical Theaceae flowers in shape. Finally, I like the Drimys fellow very much, so I knew the answer right away. I used the 'I bet' phrase, cause I'm in no way as good a plant identifier as Ron B is. Cheers, Tomasz from Poland
Wrong leaves etc. for Drimys winteri. Enlarge photos of specimen in question, compare with others online.
Looking again I see this was a Drimys, afterall. O'Grodnick's assessment was the correct one. Floral morphology clearly wrong for Schima and right for Drimys.
O'Grodnick, well done! Ron B. status points for being humble. So I guess the ID count for you goes to 568 to 1? :) (of course I am just teasing folks, Ron B is great at ID)
