Pictures of my A. discolor, from wild seed collected and germinated by Pepinieres La Preille (in concert with Chinese sources). Photos taken 26/9/08. -E
I wish I was more savy with the computer so I could put pics on . I love this tree , mine is almost 9' , just planted it 2 months ago . It gets maybe 3 hours direct sun and filtered light . It's location is near the brick house as to retain heat in the winter . What is the lowest temp. y'all have had this down to ? Anybody ... Bueller ?
Smalljaw, you realize he said Celsius? That's only a light frost. But don't worry, I'm told it is good for zone 7 down to -15C. Mine has certainly seen -10C. It loses leaves in winter, though. -E
yes ,i am very happy about this maple is grown very fast and in open sun without problem when have fall color i send pics....ciao
Yea , I have always moved mine into a hoop house . The color is good with ample reds . Forest Farm purchase 4 years ago .
Since the thread has been revived, a report on mine: in last year's very severe winter (-22C) it died completely to ground level. Several other maples died completely, like pectinatum 'Alice,' tutcherii, a few palmatums. Even a poorly established pole stage cappidocicum 'Rubrum' didn't make it. (A well established ssp sinicum died to ground level, very sad). I thought discolor was dead but it sprung back with secondary growth and put on a meter before losing it's leaves this fall. There was no fall color in particular, as often seems to be the case with a secondary growth spurt. smalljaw, I think the difference in the leaves comes from whether on old or new wood, I've observed on old wood they are simple or practically so, on new stems they are distinctly tri-lobed. -E
Bonsoir/ Good evening, I received the three 2-3 yr-old seedlings I ordered from Florama today! I included the link because on a lot of websites, they say it's a rather rare species, so if any you live in Europe you might be interested. Too dark now to post photos, but I'll take some this weekend. I'm really excited to see how they develop ;-)
good choise !Acer discolor is one fantastic maple have the grown record in my garden beautiful bark ligth brow/ngrey orange striped semievergreen dry conditions and hot wind resistent, super autumn colors!
Grazie mille for your input. I just hope that it can survive: despite the climate change which is a real fact (it was 24° this afternoon!), we can still have very cold winters, or even worse, spells of frost in the spring. But what you're saying is very encouraging and in the years to come I hope I can say "Tutto va bene", as I heard so often last time I went to Sicily ;-)
Hi Alain, I think discolor can survive in our climate, but will do better when established. I guess there will be some potential issues with little plants. My tree shown above had not been protected against deer (my fault) and was eaten down to the ground. It came back with lush growth but was eaten a second time. Trying to come back, it froze in the spring and died. In spite of this I can say it was quite a strong plant... I got a grafted discolor which I planted last year. It was protected from gibier, but had already leafed out when we got the 45cm of snow in March, and the graft died. Thanks for the site, I have just order 3 little discolors, I will grow at least 1 in a pot until larger before planting! ;) cheers, -E
Yes, thanks Alex. As always the pictures make me want to visit your garden! :) I guess it is possible to get discolor from a number of sources in France, I am planning on visiting here http://www.pepinieresdauguet.fr/arbres-dornement-et-cepees late this fall to get a few trees including that one. It's not too far a drive for me. Of course there is no way to tell from the site if these plants are grafted, seedlings, etc.
