Interesting...does this appear to be a stable variegation?

Most variegated reds that have been released reverted rather quickly in cultivation and lost there variegation. If it is stable this will likely move up my list of must haves.

    Re: Acer palm. 'Fujinami nishiki'

It is too early to tell the long term stability of the variegation.
This cultivar was selected and introduced in Japan in 1998 and comes from a seedling of 'Nomura'.
M.Yano, in his Book for Maples', advises to cut branches without variegation.
My plant is in its first year in my garden and I am not following the advise of M. Yano, I will see what happens.

My understanding is that it is not a patented plant and could thus be propagated by anyone. In Europe it is proposed by several producers and does not seem to be particularly difficult to graft. I do not find justified the high price being asked.
It is a cute plant though...

    Stability of the variegation:

'is same for allmost varigated maples.
Maples variegated needs special technical cultivation plan.'

    Hi Gomero,

Actually, 'Fujinami Nishiki' has been patent applied for in the US. Check this link:

    http://www.pat2pdf.org/patents/pat20030188355.pdf

Guess I'll have to get licensed to propagate this one.

    Re: Acer palm. 'Fujinami nishiki'

    Hi Brian,

I was wrong then. I have seen it proposed by several European suppliers and that's why I inferred that. Whether or not it is also patented in Europe is an open question.

Is 'Fujinami nishiki' available in the US? I have been interested in this tree for a while now, but have never seen it in the US.

I too will be interested in trying this form out, but repeated searches have come up empty for me in the US.

I don't believe it is available anywhere yet. I imagine it will be in the next couple of years, once the patent holder begins licensing growers to propagate it.

    Re: Acer palm. 'Fujinami nishiki'

'Patent applied for' doesn't necessarily mean 'patent granted'
Do you know the outcome of the application?

Book for Maples does advise that the variety was first introduced in Japan in 1998 (presumably by the applicant for the American patent) so it is certainly new

It is a classy looking cultivar

"Nishiki" would refer to the variegation, what's the background on "Fujinami"?

    Re: Acer palm. 'Fujinami nishiki'

Here is how 'Fujinami nishiki' is written in Chinese/Japanese 藤波錦,
藤波 (Fujinami is how these two words pronounced in Japanese) = Wavy,
錦 (nishiki'is how this word pronounced in Japanese) = Multicolor/variegation
Actually, if you are interested to look for more info/photos about it, you can copy and paste these three words and google it

An update on this very attractive cultivar.
I am lucky the plant seems to keep its variegation in the same branches after four years growing it. Against what I said above in an older post, now I do follow Mr. Yano's advice and remove as much as possible the non-variegated branches.
I think this is just a matter of luck since my 'Taimin nishiki', which has similar variegation, lost all the variegation after two seasons in my garden and has never again displayed any of it. It really attires the eye of many garden visitors and I enjoy it while it lasts ;-))

I would like to make a correction for my previous comment on the meaning of “Fujinami”
My previous statement is literally translation of these two characters "藤波". After reading Mr. Yano’s description of this cultivar (Book for maples), I realized “Fujinami” actually is a family name (last name) whose is the gentleman (M. Fujunami) that discovered this cultivar.

I have both Taimin and Fujinami and I find that with small adjustments, the variegation is stable. and for me also the price at which they are proposed is right according to their beauty and rarity. I purchase from Maillot, the plants are very high quality and the variegation stay all years, so do not think it's a matter of luck ..... bye

So you have been thus far lucky with your 'Fujinami nishiki' and 'Taimin nishiki'.
I have been thus far lucky with my 'Fujinami nishiki' and I have been unlucky with my 'Taimin nishiki'

    ....thus far.....
I have good expectations it will remains also in the future with some adjustments .. you seem to take for granted that sooner or later it will disappear for sure.
maybe your taimin is a special case you should try again .....
in your experience is a matter of luck, in my no. the maples stay variegated from the first day to now...so I can not give you reason.
    bye

    David81,

My comments are not based only on my experience which, obviously, is very limited. They are based on feedback from very well known professional maple growers both in Europe and the US who have tried to make money grafting, growing and selling those cultivars. The variegation is very unstable which means that in order to make money growers would have to charge a very high price, which is what you see from those few who offer them.
For instance, Maillot, who has been mentioned often here, charges $60 for a one-year graft in a 1.5 l pot for both Fujinami and Taimin nishiki without any guarantee in case you buy it in the winter and find out after leaf out that it is not variegated.

The maillot store sell fujinami and rare item in summer time so you get a variegated tree in your parcel
    not in winter whitout leaves

it is for that all the trees is sell in the first week of may onlyu and customer are in waiting list if ordered before or after the first week of may

    why this?
some customer cut too much branches in winter time and loose the superb variegation branches.
happy wit fujinami in japan fujinami nishiki means" the reverse of the wawe."
yes fujinami is the name of the first man dsicobver this interesting maple.
be carrefull some nusrsery dont take car when graft with good variegated branches and sell a never unvariegatd maple.
    nice day
