I discovered this small plant in the corner of my garden against the house ... there appear to be about 10-25 of them suddenly sprouting up in a 1m square area. The other plants in this small garden are: Mahonia aquifolium & M. nervosa, Acer circinatum, Vaccinium ovatum, Ferns (Polystichum munitum, Polypodium glycyrrhiza), Tellima grandiflora and Sheperdia canadensis. The bed has been mulched many yeqars with leaf mulch from mostly native oak and maples and "Sea Soil".

The photos have a scale in millimetres.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what plant this is - I have no idea where to even begin!

    Thanks,

Looks like some sort of tree seedling. Put it in a pot and see what it does.

Hey, that is a good idea - thank you! I had thought that perhaps birds were dropping seeds in this corner of the garden but I have noticed that my neighbour's cat sleeps in this corner during the day as it's warm.

My Mahonia aquifolium is next to this spot and it is a heavy flower/berry producer - could these seedlings? It has sent 4-5 new plants out but I assumed these were from rhyzomes as they are growing in a line from the parent and follow the concrete foundation wall.

    ANy other ideas folks?

I don't think it's a tree - I'm not aware of any woody plant with leaves like that, which also produces a bulbous root like that. The stem and foliage also look more like those of a herbaceous plant.

    Starflower (Trientalis). Pretty native wildflower.

Wow - thanks for the quick replies! I quick look at Pojar McKinnon (aka Coastal Plants of BC including WA, OR and Alaska) p322 yields some pretty pictures that look very much like mine!

I guess once the flowers come out we'll know for sure - thanks again folks! I appreciate all your help!
