Here are some pictures of Acer palmatum 'Ornatum'. One thing you can count on with this mounding dissectum is unique coloration, especially in spring and fall.

I *think* this is an Ornatum, though it might be Brocade. Picture was taken this past fall in October.

For us this is another fairly slow growing, mound forming acer. Planted in May 1995

Can you tell me if this is Acer Palmatum Ornatum? I have been unsuccessfully trying to determine exactly what kind of maple is this as I would really add this to my collection. Thank you for your help!

(This may also be called Atropurpureum) ...

My new Ornatum, is just starting to show why it is such a wonderful maple to have in any garden. Preferably by a large rock or on a mound for this one.

What a pretty tree this is, no matter the weather. Even with rather soggy leaves today 24th July 2020. And then there will be Autumn, I cant wait !!

August 2nd 2020 and my Ornatum is starting to get those orange tips that this cultivar is famous for. I don't want to wish Summer away but can't wait to see the Autumn colours.

11th August 2020 still very hot and in fact yesterday was the hottest I've ever seen in my garden. Ground temperature hit 48° C by my trees.
They are all now suffering. But I will continue the Summer diary as requested.
My Ornatum is not doing too bad. Hope this heat does not ruin the amazing Autumn colours that this cultivar gives.

All the colours are appearing now on all my maples and as promised I will keep the photo diary going to show the transformation. So much rain now and new growth, the new shoots are loving this weather at last.
I think its gearing up to be a very good Autumn, the colours are just sneaking a peak on my Ornatum

August 29th 2020 and Autumn colours are very fast approaching. It even feels like we are in October today rather than August. 7° C at the moment.
Now the leaves are changing and the hints of the orange are appearing at the tips of the lobes. Still only August, but the signs are there.

4th September 2020 and the days seem to be getting shorter and shorter, which is a bit too fast for me. Busy time of the year in the garden for us maple growers, with less daylight !!!
A morning with no dew or rain, but colours now popping up everywhere!!
Not exactly a Portland beauty yet, but in 20 years or so who knows. The tips are changing !!!

9th October 2020 and I thought I would add this to show that not every maple gets through a hot Summer unscathed. My Ornatum has suffered and will more than likely drop it's leaves before turning the lovely bright orange this cultivar is known for. I will update in the next couple of weeks.

18th October 2020 and my fingers are crossed that the oranges will appear on my Ornatum.

17th April 2021 and here we go for another season with my Ornatum. The sun over the last few hours has dried everything out very quickly, even after I sprayed everywhere a few hours ago. Frost, then bright sun, what a difficult combination for our trees....

That is a stunning pair of Ornatums and I like them very much indeed, might be a few more years to be able to get underneath to take a photo, as in the Portland Japanese Garden, lol.

Hello, I have planted my Ornatum (2m tall) this afternoon.
I still have some place to plant another one near him tomorow.

    20210422_200958.jpg

It has always been planted alone as it is what I think such a beautiful cultivar like that should be.
But as I have a lot of maples to plant I am looking for advice on what companion would match great with him.

Theses are some of the maples I have available that I think maybe could do a good combination.

    Jerre schwartz
Inaba shidare (one 2m tall, one very young, one kinda old not tall at all)
    Deshojo
    Ryusen
    Hana matoï
    Shin deshojo
    Koto no ito
    Seiryu
    Beni maiko
    Okushimo.
Edit: I also have a young kasagi yama

They will get full sun afternoon.
    I was thinking about :
    Beni maiko
    Deshojo
    Okushimo
    Seiryu
    Koto no ito
Ryusen ( I doubt he can handle full sun so may be a no go)

Thanks for any opinion or suggestions...
I plan to buy some more cultivars this years so I could wait till I get the perfect match.
