We found one new cultivar in our neighbourhood. Please correct us if we gave wrong ID. Thank you. Reported date: April 19,2008 Prunus Avium Location: 1. E48 Ave at 2762, one at 30% blooming, almost the same as item 2, so no pic., Another one at 2733 is at the peak which is planted at the backyard of a private residence ..wonder?
In the preceding post, these all look like sweet cherries - Prunus Avium. The tell-tale sign is the sepals curling back so you don't see a star on the back on a lot of the flowers. And they're often big tall trees, except for young shoots, of course, but they're not grafted (unless they won out over what was grafted on top of their trunks) and they grow on tall main trunks. The flowers often form pompoms, but spread out more than on Akebonos.
* POSTED - No.49 Shrofugen & Ichiyo - Killarney, Vivian St.by Fraserview Golf Course Ichiyo started to bloom! posted on April 22 Some Ichiyo (or something new to me ) started to bloom on Vivian St. by Fraserview Golf Course. They are rather big old trees.
Re: No.49 Shrofugen & Ichiyo, Vivian St.by Fraserview Golf Course Not seeing the 'Ichiyo' flower shown here, maybe you are talking about the tree in the top left frame. Otherwise I think I am seeing 'Shogetsu'. If that's what the top right frame shows these are some pretty whopping examples.
Re: No.49 Shrofugen & Ichiyo, Vivian St.by Fraserview Golf Course Well I really don't know enough about the use of the name 'Ichiyo' to comment, I expect plants so-called to look more like 'Temari'. The vigorous habit and amount of dark coloring in the newly opened flowers and leaves probably casts 'Shogetsu' in doubt. I'm not near any of my print references.
Re: Victoria-Fraserview Beautiful Ichiyo are at their peak blooming on Apr 28, 2008 Location: #7463 - 7615 Vivian Dr, near Fraserview Golf Course Status: 100% blooming for seven large trees
Re: Ichiyos - Vivian Drive Beautiful Ichiyo are at their peak blooming on Apr 28, 2008 Location: #7463 - 7615 Vivian Dr, near Fraserview Golf Course Status: 100% blooming for seven large trees
These are small trees began blooming, and I wondered either Pink Perfection or Kanzan or maybe a mix. I tried very hard and found stamens with white vexillate filament on pics, still I'm not sure. Reported date: Apr 28,2008 Location: the walls of SafeWay at the intersection of School Ave and Seniac St. Status: 30-50% blooming for seven trees According to Ron B's description" Pink Perfection look like ice cream with their candy pink margins and white centers", they are not, so I guess all are Kanzan.
These are updated photos for P.Avium at their peak blooming. Reported date: April 29, 2008 Location: E47 Ave 2700 Block between Vivian and Raleigh st., Eight of them
Kiku-Shidare-Zakura is at the peak of blooming. Looks like thousands of petals! Great beauty. Reported date: Apr.29, 2008 Location: #2718 on E44 Ave of one at a private residence
Walking around the Killarney areas on this lovely day, we found Avium Plena began to bloom in three locations. The double flowers, recurved sepals and green leaves are just like the booklet mentioned. Reported Date: April 29, 2008 1st Location : #2796 at E51th Avenue with one, Status of 30% blooming 2nd Location : #6250 Kerr St. close to Killarney Park Status: One is of 60% blooming but other two are of 10% 3rd Location: Kerr St. between E45 & E47 Avenue Status: 14 trees at around 20% blooming
We missed it before, but fortunately we captured some photos for Shirotae before it's gone. Reported date: Apr 29, 2008 Location: Kerr Street besides a church near to E48th Ave Status: full blooming and began to fall Flowers of old with centre in red and new in yellow
Tai Haku, the trees are quite small here, but the size of flowers to 6 cm accross which you won't miss. Reported date: Apr 29, 2008 Location: #6237 Battison St. inside the D.HN MacCorkindale school Status: six trees over their peak blooming and fell around 20%
Today's last new findings, but the spectacular flowers are a perfect ending. Reported date: Apr 29,2008 Mikuruma-gaeshi: Location: #3186 on E50th Avenue Status: at the peak blooming with slightly falling [Edited by wcutler May 4, 2020]: this tree is no longer there. I happened to notice the flower which was not opened is with six sepals - quite unusal (on the first pic of 2nd line).
I think the tree in the previous posting looks like Mikuruma-gaeshi, showing its late-flower colours, though I'm not sure I can tell you why, since the blossoms do look like the Ojochin blossoms in our booklet. But the shape is right for Mikuruma-gaeshi, the pink veining on the petals is right (nice photo of that); and the way the blossoms cluster around the trunk or branch like that is right for Mikuruma-gaeshi, and the Ojochin tree in the booklet doesn't look like its blossoms would do that. If Mikuruma-gaeshi, some of the blossoms could be Tai Haku size.
* POSTED - 40 Avium Plena - Killarney, Kerr from 45th to 47th Avium plena trees line the west side of Kerr St from East 45th to 47th. These are a 2008 VCBf Festival Favourite. Mayling and Willy's photos show the trees open only about 20% on April 29, but they open quickly and should be more showy by this weekend.
Re: No.49 Shirofugen - Killarney, Vivian St. by Fraserview Golf Course The single Shirofugen at the south end of the row of Ichiyos has started opening its beautiful white double flowers and coppery leaves. Between it and the Ichiyos is one Kanzan, bringing together 3 late-blooming double-flowered cherries in one great location.
Re: Killarney Ukon Kerr/Rosemont By the Fraserview golf course on Kerr south of Rosemont we found a single fairly young Ukon. The yellow-green colour is distinctive against a white background, though not as pronounced as the ones in our Burnaby Central Park posting.
Re: Killarney Takasago (6600 block Vivian) In the 6600 block of Vivian South of 50th are several Takasago, whose blossoms are developing a beautiful rich pink as they age, making an effect like hundreds of bright eyes looking down at you.
Kanzans are at their peak blooming. No wonder it is the topmost cherry in Vancouver. Awesome flowers were captured for those on two sides road. Reported date: May 4th, 2008 Locations: 1. E42nd Ave between Killarney and Earles St. 2. E44th Ave between Wales and Earles 3. E46th Ave between Doman and Kerr st. 4. E47th Ave between Butler and Doman St. 5. E48th Ave between Vivian and Killarney 6. Mckinnon St. between 43rd and 45th Ave 7. Toderick St. between 43rd and 45th Ave 8. Vivian St. between 47th and 48th Ave
Avium Plenas are getting whiter than one week ago on the Kerr Street. Maybe a few days it will turn to full blossom. Don't miss it! Reported date: May 4th, 2008 Location: Kerr Street between 45th and 47th Avenue Willy and I will be away for a couple weeks, so when we are back they will be gone.
Re: * POSTED - 40 Avium Plena - Killarney, Kerr from 45th to 47th The Avium Plena are at their best, especially with unexpected blue sky in background.
It sure looks like there are some vexillate filaments, or something like that on some of the flowers, but they have Kanzan leaf and flower colouring and I guess tree shape. And not enough vexillate filaments. So Kanzans do have filaments, and it seems some of them are vexillate; and for the filaments (above the anther), the thing we want someone to demonstrate is what we read in the Kuitert Japanese Flowering Cherries book: that the Kanzan filaments turn purplish red when the flowers are old and the stamens have turned slight pink.
