My mother-in-law bought me this plant for Christmas stating that it is a "mother-in-law plant". I can see that it's a succulent, but upon searching for it's care instructions I can see it is not the "mother-in-law" plant. Please help and let me know if this plant is appropriate for a house with a child.

Lol. Seemed we have something in common about the name. In Indonesia we call it 'Mother in law's tounge'. Yeah, it's a Sansiviera.

Sansevieria trifasciata 'Hahnii'. Its the original green leafed form not the silvery 'Silver Hahnii'.

Sorry but none of the Sansevierias are poisonous.

The claim of skin irritation is misleading and more likely the result of confusion with some other foliage plant such as Aglaonema or Diffenbachia.

They've lost their credibility. It seems they have confused Sansevieria with Agave and Yucca and copied the info from one another.

The genus Sansevieria is too diverse to lump them all together as poisonous.

The fibrous leaves may be an irritant when digested but they contain no toxic properties.

Never heard of any cases of dermatitis resulting from touching the leaves. Some of the species do have leaves with an abrasive rough surface or sharp leaf tips, such as Sans. cylindrica.
