I've seen this quite rare species in Seaworld (San diego) last week.

This is an Acer paxii (aka Acer oblongum biauritum), one of the few evergreen maple (with Acer sempervirens).

This species is from China but needs warm climate (not less than USDA 8).
Leaves about 2 inches long with 1 inch petiole.
    Smooth grey bark.

Close to Acer buergerianum (can be grafted on) and Acer fengii.
    More pictures here

Any other informations would be useful ;-)

"From SW China. Discovered by P. Delavay in 1883. Named in 1887 after Ferdinand Albin Pax (1858-1942), a German botanist who published an Acer monograph in 1885-86. G. Forrest sent seeds to England but maybe he wasn't first to do so. In any case, compared to its close relative Acer oblongum, PAX'S MAPLE bears 2 1/2" leaves prevailingly three-lobed, reminiscent of those of TRIDENT MAPLE, A. Buergerianum. It is also fully evergreen and more tender. Its seeds are reluctant to germinate. California nurseries have offered it since </=1954-55. Record: 49' x 6'5" x 46 1/2' Los Angeles, CA (1993; pl.1955)." - Jacobson, North American Landscape Trees

    Re: Acer paxii

Acer paxii - private collection (seed grown). This tree is definitely tender here in USDA Z8 - this is our second one; it is shrubby, and the bugs love it.

    Hi Andre,

I am an avid grower of Bonsai trees in Florida. Can you suggest a nursery where I can obtain specimens of Acer paxii to grow here. I paricipate in maintaining the Bonsai collection at The Morikami Japanese Bonsai collection in Delray Beach, Florida. Thank you. Ron Kessler ronlene@bellsouth.net
