My (about) seven year old Windmill Palm has four seed pods on it this year. Any help propagating these seeds would be appreciated. Yvonne
Re: Windmill Palm Seed Pods On thier own, Windmill palms Trachycarpus fortunei produce infloresence (flowers) not seeds. You need the presence of a male and female tree to produce seed. Seed will only form on a female tree when pollonated by a male tree. On very rare occasions both types of infloresece may appear on a single tree, thus cloning itself. Again, a very rare occurance. I have many palm trees and some are producing a yellow seed cluster (or flower ) how would i tell if its a seed or flower .how would i tell the difference between a male and female plant. any help on this would be appreciated
Re: Windmill Palm Seed Pods Here's photograghic detail showing the difference between male and female Trachycarpus fortunei (Windmill palm). For comparision purposes both male and female are shown. The male palm on the left, has pale yellow infloresence. The female palm on the right is much greener in comparison. The last photo shows clippings of these in detail (male on the left-female on the right) There is a big difference when viewed closely. The male flowers (pale yellow) will release pollen dust when brushed against, female palms do not. Hope this clears up any uncertainty. Cheers, LPN.
