I've been certain that this is a sweet cherry, Prunus avium, for 10 years, but now I'm wondering, as it has flowers now, beginning of March, with an area with leaves. I wonder if the west side of the tree is something else, 'Somei-yoshino' that was grafted? And I never noticed that that side didn't have flowers in April? The petals are looking a little narrow for that, not overlapping. They don't look pretty enough for 'Pandora', which I've never seen with leaves. I'm imagining that I'm seeing non-reflexed sepals on the west side flowers and reflexed ones on the east side. I'm posting what I took on my camera, but I'm hoping Willard will help with better photos tomorrow. West side flowers East side flowers
Here is the trunk of this tree: Willard took some photos for me. I don't really see much difference here, one side of the tree or the other. I only thought of measuring them before I got there, then forgot. They were maybe a bit over 2cm. I guess this is just an unruly mazzard cherry, Prunus avium. I measured the flowers, and have compared them here with the only other flowers that look even similar that are out now: 'Spire'. The fallen 'Spire' flower calyces didn't feel at all sticky, but they do look quite different when compared with these. 'Spire' are the two on the left, flowers from the avium are the three on the right.
