Not sure if I can get a photo this year. But this one is at a private residence at Wilsonville, off Bell Road. Seen here just after being reduced a few feet in width to just 50' feet wide. If they did not need to ride a mower under it, or see the view above it from their second story, it would easily have reached 60' feet in width. It was about 55' wide hours before this photo, having put on 3' to 4' extra width from the previous year. Still one of my favorite tree's to have worked on. This one had good growing conditions. Good soil and not watered much in summer.
Fantastic tree. The wide, spreading habit is one of this cultivar's best features, but it's also its Achilles' heal. Damage from passing vehicles in street plantings ruins more 'Shirotae' than people would imagine. The problem is more that the typical rootstock (mazzard) is so prone to bacterial canker that there's always inoculum around to infect the damaged 'Shirotae' tissue. This combination generally leads to a shortened life. I'm interested to know whether the large cut visible in the image will actually heal or be the trigger for this tree's decline.
