The pruning scars do tell a sad story.

Yes, 'Beni-shidare'. It's probably been open for a while, is fading toward white. I don't know why people get weeping trees if they don't want weeping trees, but that's a very popular style around here. Maybe it's like clipping dogs' ears. People think it's the proper thing to do, shows care or something.

Yes it's been open for a while. These shapes are so prevalent (willows and aspens too) and it's indeed quite sad.

Power cherry scouting on the runway with Wendy Cutler on April 8, 2018 at Larry Berg Flight Path. Young 'Akebono'. See posting #353.

Thanks to Daniel Tam for putting a marker on the VCBF map for these 'Akebono' on Sweet Ave at Hazelbridge Way.

Noticed this tree over a week ago when it started showing buds. Today it's blooming. I'm guessing Rancho?

Just by that 'Rancho' there's a little grove of 11 'Akebono' together with a couple of other trees.

And here are two Schmitt Cherry trees that I only noticed yesterday. They are inside the Mariner's Village, one is on the lawn not far from the entrance, the other is further in, both on the right-hand side when you enter via Garry St.

There are around 8 cherry trees along Moncton Street west of Steveston Community Park. They seem like 'Somei-yoshino'. The flowers are generally smaller than those of 'Akebono', but I do found some that are bigger, such as in IMG9219. I've been there three times this spring (see photos below). So far I haven't observed any extra petaloid. The twigs seem very 'knobby'. Do you think these are 'Somei-yoshino'?

Here are three more photos I took of the same tree in IMG9205 above on April 1 when the bloom peak has just passed.

Anf finally here are two photos taken very early on March 22 when mostly were buds and very few blooms.

There are another 15 or so similar trees along an east-west walking path across the Steveston Community Park. I will post in the following post.

About 15 cherry trees are planted along a walking path across the Steveston Community Park (see map below), with some Kanzan and other trees planted in-between. Are these 'Somei-yoshino'?

    Tree forms:

A lot of them seem to be affected with Witches' Broom.

    I'll agree to that.
OK, I'm on record for not answering 'Somei-yoshino' vs. 'Akebono' when the flowers have reached this stage. And some of them are half-trees, so we don't even get a good idea of the shape. I do think a lot of them look like 'Somei-yoshino', enough that you can call them that for now and we'll work it out next spring. I think the 6th photo looks like 'Akebono' - a V-shaped framework with a horizontal aspect to the flowering branches, or maybe more likely a yoshino seedling, as it doesn't look like it would have deliberately been planted there. Seedlings don't come true to the cultivar, so you can't really tell what the parents were and not being clones, they don't get to take the cultivar name. I haven't provided for identifying those on the map. Do I have to?

About the 6th photo. The trunk is actually pretty sturdy but it’s hidden behind the bushes, and the v-shape ones came from the trunk. What do we call those “limbs” that shoot out from very low of the trunk?

Maybe we’ll wait till next spring before putting them on the map?

Two more smaller trees on Broadway east of 2nd Ave.

There are a few more on Broadway west of 2nd Ave all the way till 3rd.

    Thanks, May.
Veronica, it's such a good park location that I think you should put them on the map now, so that people know to go there next year. If we're wrong about the ID, it won't be the first time. I'm willing to take May's advice. I'll even make them a festival favourite.
I'm very excited to see two new scouts working together on this! You both have a very good feel for these trees.

    Thank you, May.
The ones on Moncton were marked on the map a couple of days ago. I have just added the marker for the ones behind the Japanese language school.

Noticed this tree the other day. Wendy thinks this could be a 'Whitcomb' cherry.
It's on Garry Street just west of No.1 Road. I'll definitely revisit next year.

Could this be a 'Kiku-shidare-zakura'? Still buds mostly but some flowers started blooming. It's in the yard of 5564 Wallace Rd.
