We purchased a house in December of 06. The large (read overgrown) garden is entered from the front through a stand of 10 mature Lindens. They appear to have been pollarded at about 12' - 14', but I don't think they have been touched in a few years -- some branches rising out of the old prune sites are 2" through. They are overwhelming the garden and blocking all of the light. I will attach some photos.

My question is: Can I prune them back to the old sites? Are there any problems with taking that aproach, and can I do it in one year?

    Thanks in advance.
