I have found a large dark area near the base of my Alder tree. The bark is splitting in this area and falling off. I'm wondering if I should have this tree removed or if I should just leave it be?

Doesn't look promising. How do we know this is Phytophthora?

Hi Ron. Thank you for response. I'm not completely sure if it is. I based my findings on the PNW Plant Disease management handbook's description of the disease. Most of the symptoms and photos of the disease matched what I'm seeing on my tree. This particular tree is growing close to my house. My fear would be that it would collapse on my house if it is diseased. I have two other Alders that are 30 feet away from this one. What would you do?
