Hi Dan, as it turns out my old OnePlus is losing it, and I'm looking at a new phone, including the 13 pro. I assume that's what you're using here, as I understand it the 13 and 13 mini don't have the macro mode. Also, do you know if macro mode is actually a macro lens setting, or done in software?

Any more comments now that you've had it for a bit? I'm also looking at the Samsung S21 Ultra. Unfortunately my carrier has only ever poorly supported my OnePlus, otherwise I'd get the 9, which seems to have good cameras. So my choices are limited, they don't even support the more modern Pixel phones beyond 3...

Thanks for any advice you can give, it's a whopping big purchase! Cheers, -E

    Hi E,

I’m using the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which has the same camera as the standard size iPhone 13 Pro. The macro mode is a hardware feature. The link below could be useful to explain better than I can!

Macro camera on iPhone 13 Pro explained: how to use it?

I’m not too clued up on Android phones, I’ve always used Apple and been very happy, particularly with build quality and battery life. I also find them easier to use.

I’m very happy with mine, the camera is truly incredible.
    cheers

    Dan

Thanks Dan! That is very useful.

The consensus from reviewers is that the 13 pro/pro max is the best camera on any phone. But aside from "now has macro" they rarely talk about this feature. From reading the article it appears that Samsung has had this feature, though I haven't found it mentioned anywhere. More research needed!

I had an iPhone 4S and liked it, but have always found the lack of flexibility with Apple problematic. (My wife is an Apple Person, so I understand the attraction!) But though on balance I'd buy an Android phone, if the camera is truly superior I'll go with the 13. I checked it out in a store, the screen looks really awesome.

    cheers, -E
