Okame - Killarney, E 58th, Kerr to Rosemont First posting in 2009 Okames might be coming into bloom already - they are at UBC, but I have no idea about this festival favourite location on E 58th from Kerr to Rosemont.
Re: Okame - Killarney, E 58th, Kerr to Rosemont Pictures taken on March 24th. May take few more warm days to open up.
Re: Okame - Killarney, E 58th, Kerr to Rosemont Shanae, I think the trees you posted aren’t Okame. If you see the neighbourhood Blog of Killarney, you can see Okame Mayling Chang posted last year. (He also made mistakes at first and Wendy corrected.) So I took pictures of the trees at the private garden of the town house. It was hard to see near, (because they are very close to the windows of somenoe's home) but they haven’t bloom on March 25. They are red enough to bloom in short time. on March 25
Re: Okame - Killarney, E 58th, Kerr to Rosemont Okames have just started to to bloom. But not yet you can notice from far. The branches near the house where they can have full sun but no cold wind started to bloom. Yesterday (March 31) it was too windy. I couldn't take nice close-up shot.
Re: Okame - Killarney, E 58th, Kerr to Rosemont Frequent extreme homeliness of this cultivar in this region quite apparent in these last shots. Posters from back East love it, apparently it doesn't die back there like it does here. Curiously, in Britain - where one might expect similar results to those here - it has been given an Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society. Still, there is the problem of the garishness of the combination of petal and calyx colors. From a distance the trees appear rust-colored in flower. The Taiwan cherry parent providing the red calyx color has (typically) the petals colored the same, providing a uniform and striking bright color - rather than a color clash.
Re: Okame - Killarney, E 58th, Kerr to Rosemont You know, Okame means "homely woman" in Japanese. It comes from the name of the mask of Noh (Traditional Japanese Play) which represent "homely and comical but cheerful, warm-hearted woman". I understand Okame was made in England. As far as I see the photo of Washington, Okame is nice shaped and beautiful pink cherry tree. I can't understand why the Englishman named it Okame.
Re: Okame - Killarney, E 58th, Kerr to Rosemont >You know, Okame means "homely woman" in Japanese< Ha! Ingram probably had something to do with the play in mind. "Homely and comical but cheerful, warm-hearted" could certainly be used to describe the tree, as it appears under local conditions. Jacobson, Trees of Seattle - Second Edition suggests it may do better on a warm site; this could explain why eastern North Americans viewing it in the much hotter climate back there seem not to be familiar with the dying back it displays here.
The double-flowered form of Pendula, "Yae-beni-shidare" in bloom at the northwest corner of Coleridge and Raleigh, by the western boundary of Killarney Park, April 14, 2009.
Killarney Park's two Yoshinos in bloom April 14, 2009 on the west side of the park at Raleigh and E. 47.
Killarney Park's two Spires in bloom April 14, 2009 at the southwest arm, north side of E.48 between Raleigh and Killarney St.
Killarney Park's Akebonos in bloom, April 14, 2009. Three are by the playground on the park's eastern side, just west of the traffic lights at the junction of Rupert and Kerr St. Two youngsters are by the wall of Killarney Secondary.
A lone Rancho in bloom April 14, 2009 on Killarney Park's east side, Rupert and E47, just north of the Akebonos by the playground area.
Re: Okame - Killarney, E 58th, Kerr to Rosemont On April 14th. This year cold weather prevents Okame & eartly blooming cherry for long time, but once they opened they are finishing very quickly. I missed the peak bloom.
A Shirotae starting its blooming in churchyard across from Killarney Park, east side of Kerr and E. 48, April 15, 2009.
The Yae-beni-shidare that Anne photographed at Coleridge and Raleigh, is in bloom now. People on David Tracey's Talk and Walk really liked the rose-like small double blossoms and the shape of the tree, except that it seemed trimmed at the bottom.
On April 21, I visted Killarney Park. Whatzit tree (See cultivar ID forum) near 46th west side of park was full bloom and very beautiful. [edited by wcutler 2012jan09: Mariko and I think this one might be a yama-zakura] But Somei-yoshinos near by were beyond peak bloom. Healthy green leaves started to grow at the tip of branches. On 46th, Aviums just started to bloom.
Takasagos on Vivian Dr.are very beautiful now! I think there are 8 trees between 49th & 51st and at least 1 on the north side of 49th. (Pictured on April 21) April 23,2009 Ichiyos are Just started to bloom. They are on east side of Vivian Dr. around Brightwood Pl. near the Fraserview Golf course. In the wood of Golf Course there are Aviums blooming. But I was shocked to find one of them have Witch's brooms. (fearful disease for cherry which will spread other cherries and they'll be weakened and have not many flowers.)
May 5,2009 There are 14 huge Avium Plenas on Kerr between Rupert (Waverley) and 45th. They had thicker trunks than ones on Bruce St &49, Elgin St. & 49, Olympic &41 or Highbury & 4th. So they are older and most of them have minor witch’s blooms. There are 3 younger Avium Plenas on Kerr near 48th and a few Kanzans on the same road where the name just changes to Rupert St. There are a lot of Kanzans around there. They are finishing now. Kanzans on 46th between Kerr and Doman Kanzans on 48th between Killarney and Wales There are 6 young Amanogawas at the yard of the residential buildings near 48th & Wales. Takasagos on 46th near Killaney Park had finished. Aviums on 47th were finishing, too.
Killarney has a lot of postings, but Joseph Lin has a list of a lot of trees not photographed here, so here's some homework for next year's scouts: Cherry records in Killarney Community in 2007~2008 Butler St. from East 47~54 Ave. Akebono Champlain Cres. at Three Cedars Dr. by school Akebono East 46 Ave. from Kerr to Tyne St. Akebono East 50~53 Ave. from Kerr to Doman St. Akebono East 63 Ave. from Kerr to East 62 Ave. Akebono Elmhurst Drive from West 54 Ave. to Killarney St. Akebono Killarney St. from Kingsway to West 41 Ave. Akebono McKinnon St. from East 41~45 Ave. Akebono Rupert St. from East 41~45, 50~51 Ave. Akebono East 58 Ave. or Rosemont Dr from Kerr to Butler Akebono 29 trees Lancaster, Killarney, Raleigh, Dawson St (49~54 Ave) Akebono 38 trees Brooks St. from East 46~54 Ave. Akebono 72 trees East 48 Ave. from Raleigh to Killarney St. Somei-yoshino
First posting 2010 Killarney Park's two Somei Yoshinos (on the east side of Raleigh Street, north of E.48) in full bloom on March 6, 2010.
March 18 afternoon, I visited row of 15 Takasago and two Yama-zakura on East 46 Ave., 2 Somei-yoshino at East 47 Ave., one Yae-beni-shidare at Coleridge, 7 Yama-zakura and two Spire on East 48 Ave., 3 Akebono? near Waverley Ave in and around Killarney Park. [edited 2012jan09 by wcutler: we've renamed those yama-zakura now and are calling them sargentii hybrids.] I also visited row of Takasago on Vivian St. 5 Akebono on East 58 Ave., row of 6 Akebono on Rosemont Dr., rows of Akebono on Nairn, Copeland, Langford Ave., 14 Akebono at Champlain Heights School Annex, row of Kobus Magnolia on East 52 Ave. & Tyne St. There are one Mikuruma-gaeshi at #3186 East 50 Ave., one Washi-no-o 30% at #3183 East 51 Ave. and the other Washi-no-o 30% at #3131 East 51 Ave. are shown as below.
I was there today to see some of the other trees, but was photographing these 'Somei-yoshino' when Ed Gougler, who lives in the house across the street started telling me about how his wife asked for those to be planted. I thought he was joking, but no, he said he and his wife lived here when the park was just a swamp and the Parks Board asked them what they wanted to see, so one of their two requests was for cherries. There were originally three, but some kids pulled out one of them (which was replaced with the hill cherry).
I just came across one of the locations Joseph Lin mentions in posting #69 . I'm glad I didn't realize there were so many others - I was already late. These are about eight 'Akebono' in front of an apartment or condo building on Rosemont east of Kerr. A few blocks away, on 63rd near its intersection with 62nd(!) is this one very nice private 'Akebono'.
