I would like to try and grow avacado from its stone (heart) I have one going now I just kept it in water till it started, I have just planted it in good soil it is growing though very small. I am sure there must be a right way to do it. I love Avacado in every salad also make a dip with it. I will appreciate any help I can get.
I am new to this site glad I found it.
    Thanks. Julie

    Welcome to the forum juliecanfield!

I don't know much about growing avocados from the stone but I did a quick search and here are some older threads that are relevant.....the third link is particularly informative.

There's quite a bit of information on good old wiki as well....

Where do you live? That will probably be the main factor in whether or not your avocado will fruit.

Sorry I can't be of more help

Never been able to understand this fetish with stabbing toothpicks into them that some sites seem to suggest is necessary. Maybe it fulfils some primaeval urge to wound and destroy. It certainly doesn't help the seed germinate. So much better just to plant the seed in a pot full of soil.

As house plants, Avocados leave a lot to be desired. The leaves are fairly large but nothing very exciting, and they are very prone to getting brown dead tips/edges in dry house air (they like tropical rainforest conditions, more like a Turkish bath). The plants also have a strong tendency to grow as a single stem without branches for the first few years, not surprising as they want to be large trees. They are also very difficult to get to bear fruit as house plants (unless you have a 5 metre high greenhouse, of course!). If you want an indoor tropical fruit, Guava is much easier to get to bear fruit.

    Thankyou Micheal

I guess I won't be eating my own avacado any time soon. However I have it in a pot it did have a green top when I planted it, I will just see what happens for interest sake.

I have an avocado that took over a year to start growing, but now is growing by leaps & bounds for the past six months! I'm not growing it for fruit, just as a curiosity, sort of. My question is can I encourage it to branch out without killing it? It is about 2 feet tall with quite large leaves for it's height.
