Do the seeds of the balsam flower have to freeze over winter, in order to germinate in spring? Last fall, I collected the seeds, instead of letting them fly all over. I dried and stored them indoors and have been trying to get them to germinate in potting soil, uncovered, for weeks, with no results.
And, yes, I realize that they are invasive, but I love them.

Well, I can't recommend growing these purposefully. Nature is taking quite the hit from invasives. NCC: Policeman's helmet

But I'll give you a hint at what I think... does the location of where these plants grow ever dry out?

It does. And they seem to stay roughly in the same area. The deer seem to like them which is why I collected the seeds from the few plants left last fall.

Just read about Policeman's Helmet - will discard the seeds.
