I’ve just been notified by Esvelds that they now add a 150 euro charge to any U.K order for the plant passport cost and the parcel post cost is inflated also to cover new admin costs associated with Brexit.
Has anyone else in the U.K had this and with any other European nursery?

I do understand that this is not down to the nursery and we have consequences we have to accept from Brexit, but this is a big surcharge and many cultivars available within Europe cannot be sourced here.

I haven't heard this yet from any EU suppliers, but this a coincidence as I was chatting to Luke about Esveld earlier today. If this is the case, then tbh any imports of maples to the UK and vice versa will be really curtailed.
    This indeed shocking news J.

Below is the text from correspondence, in a follow up they state they are actually charging below
    cost...
The Dutch VAT will be removed
from the prices, but you will have to pay the British VAT upon import. Also
you need to pay for a Phytosanitary (health) Certificate costing Euro 150
per shipment. Sorry, that is caused by the Brexit.

This may have an effect on the MS seed exchange that E @emery was discussing on the forum a couple of weeks ago.

And so the smuggling will start.

But on a positive note, is this a chance that we all now buy from our own countries and not increase the mileage footprint that is being talked about so much these days by the scientists regarding global warming.

It’s the lack of U.K growers offering a decent catalogue. When we start our addiction, we buy from what’s available locally and then go on the search for those special trees and we can’t find them over here.
I had wondered if we need to group together when ordering and this makes it cost effective?

When doing so the appropriate term would be "grove".

The truth is that even for the specialty growers, (Hippo, Larchfield etc) the plants are largely produced outside the UK. Do you guys know which UK nurseries now do large scale JM production?

I think the 150€ is tough for the individuals, but probably not for business buyers who are buying many palettes worth. I don't know if UK professional buyers will be required to pay VAT but suspect the answer is yes. Maybe you guys know. As EU members they would have been exempt. So that's another potential cost to pass on. If the plants are held up until the VAT is payed, that could be a real problem for the quality.

As far as the Maple Society seed distribution, we have restricted all sourcing to the UK. This is a real shame for the members of course, though most probably won't notice. So UK members will be able to get seed, and we'll see how well it works for members in the rest of the world.

It’s 5 to 8 trees of a small size per parcel, hopefully it’s one off 150 cost per total consignment, so for example if they were delivered to one address that suits a few of us that are not far apart.
Esveld will deduct the NL vat from the costs advertised and then the U.K buyer has to pay U.K vat this side for the goods to be delivered, so potential delays.

The main U.K specialists I used were Barthelemys and Chris Pattison.
Chris is listed on the resource page but the nursery has now closed.
Barthelemys is great and a real gem, they do all their own grafting and claim to graft in excess of 40,000 maples per year.
I love this place, but they were affected by COVId last year and don’t have the usual stocks or didn’t on my last visit.
It’s the more unusual trees I’m looking for now and I like to pick and choose if possible, so being able to visit is a bonus.

That's a very good point J. But there are a few more specialist nurseries over here now, although a few more are not doing mail order due to the problems encountered with damaged packaging. I know that Junkers has some very interesting maples and Karan who runs it is very helpful. I would be interested to hear the MS committee thoughts on all of this and see if any suggestion come forward. I did tag Emery into the last post to see what his thoughts are.
But I think for a while we are going to have to live with the consequences of Brexit until things get sorted out.

I'd forgotten about Karan, and good to hear about Barthelemys. Except for the Covid part...

Brexit has been a nightmare, I run a business with my wife, what was so easy before (import/export into Europe) has become a nightmare, the paperwork, protocols and we now pay import duties on certain products that we didn’t before.
We can send goods to Asia, Australia, Canada, Middle East with out any hassle, but Europe is a nightmare.
We are still waiting on deliveries from our U.K supplier of French produced fabrics that were ordered before Xmas.

Does Karan sell young plants as well as specimen subjects?
I buy specimens but most of mine are grown in from young grafts and it gives a sense of satisfaction seeing a 4mtr specimen that you’ve grown and shaped.

No J, she mainly does quite mature specimens. Costs are quite high because of this sadly. But the quality is excellent.
Another nursery that M @ROEBUK thinks very highly of is, Packhorse Farm in Yorkshire. They have a fantastic catalogue, but don't do mail order.
    But if up that way!!!!!?

Since I’ve known Roebuck on the forum he has always recommended Hilton and Packhorse.
I have it in my wish list to visit with a van when I have an excuse to be in the area.
I think I might come home broke.
I want to visit Westonbirt again some time and they had a decent plant centre with harder to find plants, hopefully this is still the case?
RHS Wisley was always good for decent specimens, not sure if this is still the case since their makeover?

Westonbirt was supplied by Esveld. Don't know if that's still the case.

Karan used to do small trees, too bad she has stopped.

They no longer have a plant centre there J. This is such a shame and tbh I question why they closed.

Haven't been for 3 years, but when there the plant centre was excellent, not cheap by any means, but good trees.

It won't; this was just the formalisation (by the EU Parliament) of the agreement reached back at the end of last year. The EU Parliament at least had the opportunity to debate and examine the agreement; the UK parliament didn't, it was rushed through by the Johnson regime with no more than an hour or two of debate, to prevent people from knowing just how awful it is.

You are lucky that Esveld are prepared to send to UK at all; the paperwork and charges are so onerous that most small businesses have completely ceased trade between Britain and the EU in both directions. This is entirely the fault of the Johnson regime; the brexit extremists running the show here are trying to maximise the damage to UK trade and economy so they can buy up bankrupt businesses very cheap for their private personal gain, and run the UK as a personal fascist fiefdom with slave labour with no human rights or health/safety protections.

Went to a large garden centre yesterday to buy some more bedding plants etc and while there just thought i would look at the Acers , well gobsmacked isn't the word i would use to describe the selection of basic run of the mill imported dutch trees , all the usual suspects Orange dream , Katsura , Atropurpureum ,Jordans etc etc nothing out of the ordainary all in 10ltr but what made me look twice was the price all at £55 and to be honest i think the pots they were in were lets say very roomy !!!! couldn't believe the prices. and the poor selection they had, usually have a nice mixture but i think they aren't buying as many due to the brexit regs now.

Sorry M I thought it was near you, but as can be seen by their website, they have a great selection of trees and plants, as you have previously stated.
