I always love the deep purples and burgundy colours on my Suminagashi.

I'm sure it'll take no time at all - mine has put up with all sorts of abuse over the last year and seems to be flourishing, so your wife's little guy is going to delight you I'm sure.

Thanks Xi, I'm sure it will. After seeing your photo, this is going next to a lime green. I love that contrast you have there.

20th June 2021 and an update on my wife's Suminagashi. It's doing nicely IMO.

Fatsia Japonica and Suminagashi now in an all-out race to see who can get bigger, faster:

7th July 2021 and my Sumi nagashi is looking a little bit special in this mornings rain. The transition of greens makes for a lovely colouring IMO.

Suminagashi still staying purple in the middle of the summer, and showing some strong growth during the season:

After being relatively static for two years, Suminagashi has decided to send out two branches at a completely different angle from the direction it's been growing until now, complete with some bright red colour:

Sometimes they just rest for a while. Then when we least expect it, off they go. Aren't they wonderful Xi !!!

They are just full of surprises (and if you told your average Joe off the street that, they wouldn't believe you. Funny old hobby, isn't it?)

Going from red/purple to green-ish at this time of year. All the other maples go one way; this one goes another. Funny tree.

2nd April 2022 and so very cold here in Southern England. Tbh I wish my maples were still fast asleep. But they are not and my Sumi nagashi is unfurling it's leaves.

Gave my Suminagashi a change of scenery this year (the fun - and danger - of container gardening, when you realise you've just spent an hour hauling heavy pots around the garden!)

Suminagashi in its new spot, fully leafed-out and giving some lovely shade to the one sitting beneath it when the sun shines:

Thanks D, I hope so: I've been looking for the right tree for my Buddha to sit beneath, and Suminagashi has both the colour and - or this particular tree - a lovely sideways lean that I find so aesthetically pleasing, I think it's there to stay.
