These are pictures of a friend's Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium', tree form. Definately one of my favorite cultivars of Japanese Maple.

    'Maiku jaku'

Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' is also known as 'Maiku jaku' which in Japanese means"Dancing Peacock". Here are some pictures of some that I have been growing. These were grafted in the summer of 2002. Photos were made in June 2003.

Here is my 'Aconitifolium'. This is a great tree. From the spring green and red flowers on through the summer and then finishing with the brilliant fall color. I have a climatis growing through this tree that adds to it's interest.

I am confusing this one with another Acer named "dancing peacock", can anyone clarify the differences?

If I remember right 'Aconitifolium' is referred to as Dancing Peacock.

This tree becomes unbelievably spectacular in the fall, hence the name "dancing peacock"

Hardier than most. One near here was 29' tall in 1993. More or less true-to-type seedlings were growing beneath it.

Wow...it is so beautiful. I heard this JM is not easy to grow. You are doing a very good job. I am looking for one but the dwarf acontifolium, because size is a matter of my litte yard.

Last year I bought a 15gal specimen of AJ Aconitifolium. It have not sprout yet, but even so, it looks wonderful with very good balanced branches. Here is the pic. (I will update this specimen with new pictures during this year) I hope it will do well.

I found this tree at a nursery and fell in love with it, even though it was nameless. But I had to leave it (and others) behind when I moved. I'd like to replace it, but I'm not sure what it was. I've included two pictures taken in the fall. Does it look like an "Aconitifolium" to you?

    Winter,

I'm not 100% sure, (also I'm not a geek in JM identification), but what I already have seen and read for this topic; IMHO, the first pic tell me that you're correct, and this is a "dancing peacock" (A.J. 'aconitifolium'). The other posibility will be the AJ "green cascade", but for the leave form certainly looks as 'aconitifolium'.
My own specimen is leafing out this week, so I will compare your pics with my aconitifolium.

Very young Maiku Jaku. So far all I have is pics of the blossoms. Leaves have not fully hardened off. Will update throughout the season!
