Two years ago in autumn I planted 50 double tulips. Last spring they all came up and gave a wonderful show. This year only about 8 plants came up, and out of the 8, only 4 bloomed. The other 4 just grew one big leaf each. I know it sounds pitiful. The funny thing is, in the same yard I've planted about 20 single tulips three years ago and each year they all came up and the blooms increased.

Are double flowered tulips hard to grow? I love them but I can't seem to grow them correctly. I'm afraid next year I'll have none...

    Hi Green Leaf,

When it comes to tulips, most bloom for a year or two and need to be replaced. Your doubles are in that class.

From this site - do read 'GETTING TULIPS TO LIVE FOREVER' about halfway down the page :
    http://www.oldhousegardens.com/bulb.asp?Cat=TU&page=6#tips

"Some varieties just last better, too — often Single Earlies, Single Lates, Lily-flowered tulips, and species."

From the site above, here's a list of their tulips. They list the doubles.

You might want to contact them and ask if any of their doubles perennialize.
