Nice Keith. My favorite shape is s. Junihitoe, which is also very close to Microphyllum. Aureum definitely takes the #2 spot.
That 'Garden Glory' has a very palmatum type leaf shape. I don't know anything about this one but I am guessing it is a hybrid like some of the other recent shirasawanum introductions. I also prefer the 'Aureum' from those pictured.
I'm with K4. I'm a huge fan of 'Junihitoye' (pictured). 'Palmatifolium' may not have the sexiest leaf form but it is an excellent cultivar in many ways. Sturdiness, 3 season color, winter hardiness and overall form are among its virtues.
My favorite would be 'Kawaii' and then 'Palmatifolium' second. Also hard to beat 'Kawaii' for a sturdy and very small dwarf for the right spot and then 'Palmatifolium' for its sturdiness and reliability season after season for a larger spot. 'Aureum' would get my vote for best and most unique color though! Justin
Perfection This time of the spring when Aureum shows red on the margins and in the veins is perfect. I find more to like about this plant every year.
Nice coparison Keith, the photo of Aureum totally explans why Japanese call shirasawanum "Feather fan" maple.
I only have couple A. Shirasawanum cv. I think Im going to get a 'Palmatifolium' to see how sexy she is, maybe 'Junihitoye' as well. Keith, Here are some photos of my A. Shirasawanum seedlings. Samaras were collected from Aureum located next to some different A. palmatum cv. Couple of them also shows this Reddish margin. Happy growing!
01876 Nice set of seedlings there. I really like #5. I have some seedlings that are from seed that I purchased. Supposedly from shirasawanum 'Palmatifolium'. They really don't look like shirasawanum to me, but interesting anyway. Will try to get them posted in the next week. Thanks for the photos
Wow those are really nice seedlings I have a few 'Junihitoye' seedlings that I am growing from Ed's seed. They are real small so far but very enjoyable to observe.
here are several shirasawanum leaves, 'Aureum', 'Autumn moon', 'Green flag', 'Johin', 'Kawaii', 'Junihitoye', 'Mr Sun', 'Ogura yama', 'Palmatifolium', 'Sensu'
Charlie, Amazing maples...the collection you have is mind boggling. It is reassuring to see all your maples in containers in their full glory. Since I have all my maples is containers I always wonder if they will reach a decent percentage of their full potential. Thanks for taking the time to upload your pictures. xman
Charlie, gotta agree that your contribution to the forum has been fantastic. Thanks Here is the supposed 'Palmatifolium' seedling (commercial seed lot). I like the plant, but sure doesn't have the look of shirasawanum If anyone could send me some shirasawanum seed this fall, I would greatly appreciate it
