I just got a Royal Star Magnolia. I am looking for advice on planting, what type of (if any) fertilizer to use and other useful tips.

I plan on planting the tree in the back yard in an area where it will get approx 10 hours of unobstructed sun a day. The soil is mostly clay, and it being a newer development, there is an above average amount of wind.

    Thanks

A quiet area near the house would be best, so that the early bloom can be enjoyed more readily and the tepals (petal-like parts) aren't torn by gales.

    Hi Ron,

Thanks for advice, I planted it fair ways closer to the house, more than I initially planned. It will get a bit less sun, but will be better protected from the wind.

Thanks for introducing a new word, tepals. I'd never realized there was a distinction.
