we purchased a pink dogwood 2 years ago, and planted it in an oak half-barrel. last year it was fine. this spring, it bloomed beautifully, but since then, the leaves have been turning brown, and dropping off. is it because it's planted in a tub instead of in the ground where it can spread it's roots? should we fertilize it, and if so, what should we use?
Most plants will do better and be easier to care for long term when planted in the ground rather than in a container. With potted plants, what often happens is the planting medium becomes dried out & shrinks to the point that most water applied simply runs out through air pockets. When you water, try filling the pot to the top - then watch for air bubbles escaping - a sure sign that the pot has dried out. I would not apply fertilizer unless you are sure there is a need to do so, though potted plants can lose fertility through leaching of the soil to a greater extent than those actually planted in the soil.
Thank you for your input. We have moved the dogwood to a more shady location, and it seems to be improving. We will plant it in the ground in the fall.
Fall should be an excellent time for planting. Just remember that a newly planted tree will need 1 - 2 years of very regular watering during the dry season while the roots become established.
