What is the best way to remove blackberry shrubs that have taken over an existing garden?

Cut off with loppers and pry out crowns with spading fork, when soil is moist enough for them to slip out. If this too arduous a task or brambles not among other plants that would be injured by spray can apply glyphosate herbicide to blackberry tops in autumn, when it will be translocated to crowns and damage them.

May take more than one cycle of herbicide application to achieve complete kill.

This is pretty much what I did along one side and the back of my property 7 years ago. We cleared a heavy population of Himilayan Blackberry bramble about 225' long x 8' high and 12' wide. About 3 weeks of steady work in our spare time. These have an uncanny knack of somehow hooking your skin even with great care. Persistance pays off with these and there's always periodic starts from seeds dispersed by birds etc.

    Cheers, Barrie.
