I live in Alabama and have had this pink dogwood for several years now that has only bloomed once. It seems very healthy, why will it not bloom?

I do not feed the tree. It is planted amoung pines and gets about have shade and half full sun. The tree is about 6 years old and the foliage is very nice and dark red as the season continues. The average cold temp. is around 35 to 40 degrees and the summers can get in the 90's often. I also have a white dogwood tree that has always bloomed.

Hi Dogwoods can be rather tempermental. If they are to happy they may not bloom. Can you give us any more info
ie how cold do you get in the winter ? do you feed it ?
    ifso with what?

I've dealt with this problem on the west coast and in North
    Carolina.
    Regards doug

I may be able to answer your question but I will
need to know for sure which Dogwood are you
alluding to, a Cornus florida or a Cornus kousa
for example. There was a series of introductions
back in the middle to late 80's that have not been
    proficient bloomers in many areas.

If you can, show me what the plant looks like
and include a pic of the leaf.

I have a 10 year old dogwood, that never blooms. I was told that you can give the trunk a few hits with a bat and it wil force it into blooming. Anyone ever try this?

Yes, it may work, but be careful - if the bat survives, it may be a bad sign & you might have to resort to wearing garlic braids around your neck.

On a more helpful note, I have heard anecdotes about tree whacking improving blooming, though I don't know how valid this idea is. Here is some discussion on this point:
