Just thought I would share this picture of Coprosma brunnea berries we collected for the seed today. The individual berries are 7x5mm and look like opals in the right light.

The berries were collected by the Volunteer Seed Collectors at VanDusen Botanical Garden as part of their collection and distribution program. The seed will be cleaned and then tested for viability.

It's a wonderful small scandent shrub from New Zealand, although a little wild looking for some people. There are some selections and cultivars that are worth trying, such as Coprosma 'Blue Pearls', and with around 90 species found throughout Oceania, there are a number of treasures still to be discovered by many gardeners.

The picture here is the female Coprosma brunea at VanDusen, taken September 23rd, 2003.
