I've always wondered about the identity of this houseplant. As you can see the leaves are glossy. The 'flowers' are the little green beads. I've been told that this plant is 'Chinese' and very fragrant.
I thought a plant with such a distinctive inflorescence would be easy to identify. (Parlour Palm has a similar flower stalk as seen in the photo in the thread neanthe bella seeds? | UBC Botanical Garden Forums.) Is it a shrub or a vine? Do the flowers develop into tiny yellow balls? What is the fragrance like?
Aglaia odorata has pedunculate flowers and entire leaves whereas this plant does not have peduncles and its leaves are toothed.
Chloranthaceae? Chloranthus spicatus is supposedly fragrant, the other possibility would be Sarcandra glabra.
It does look like Chloranthus spicatus. Its fragrance is supposedly very similar to that of Aglaia odorata. Here is one fan's writeup on this plant. growing4it, Would you be willing to part with a cutting or two?
