Finally decided to put this young 'Summer Gold' in the ground early spring. It did very well potted in full sun. It seem to be ok so far.

17th June 2021 and my Summer gold that has been baking in full very hot sun for the past several days was looking quite lovely IMO this morning.

30th June 2021 and two weeks of cool wet weather has not deterred my Summer gold at all. This cultivar doesn't mind whatever is thrown at at it.

My Summer Gold is looking quite pale in comparison, but to be fair we've hardly had a sunny summer so far!

Thank you, D, I quite agree! I've promised myself no more new green maples, so I'm branching out (ah-ha) and focusing more on the yellows, oranges and reds now. Summer Gold is definitely one of the best yellows out there, isn't it?

9th July 2021 and a morning of sunshine at last. So here is my Summer gold looking very bright and cheerful.

This is a lovely little tree, but I'm fascinated by the fact that it hasn't grown an inch all year - it looks exactly the same (other than some slightl colour changes) as it did in Spring!

Sometimes you just want to (gently) poke them and say "Hey! Do something!"

18th August 2021 and Autumn colours are now very evident. So early, but its been very cold and quite dark for the time of year.

After doing precisely zilch all year (I am expecting big growth from you next year to make up for it, Summer Gold!) the little tree has started to give some colour change on a few leaes:

Not the best of years for Summer Gold in my garden. I think the very late frosts and poor Summer made for a below average display. But as you say Xi, next year will make up for it.

Thanks D, I certainly hope so - for both our sakes! It's my first year with this little tree and the cheerful colours really endeared it to me: it's been very no-fuss and has weathered the heat and the dry spells much better than a lot of my others, it just hasn't done anything. I feel like if it actually grew (at all) it would rocket to the top of my list of favourites very quickly indeed :)

That’s just too beautiful Xi, yellow Japanese maples are my absolute favourite, especially Summer Gold. This is just making me depressed even more since we can’t get them here in Australia ‍♂️.

Oh no, I hope that's a 'we can't get them here in Australia yet' -- fingers crossed some pretty yellows make their way over to you in the next year or so! I know the feeling actually: here in the UK I'm enviously staring at the Celebrations and Mystic Mikawas that our US friends post and counting down the days until they're available. Someday, I hope, for both of us! :)

Hi Xi, actually I’ve spoken to a few wholesalers here in Oz, apparently we used to have Summer Gold in the country but no one seemed to be able to track them down now. Plus there were also some changes to importation laws which made it more financially expensive to bring them in again.
But yeah somehow I’m still clinging to the hope that it’ll be happening real soon too for the sake of both our sanity :-).
I’ve never even heard of Celebrations ( so thank you) but those Mystics Mikawas are simply amazing, and I totally agree, our U.S friends are very lucky indeed.

My poor Summer Gold has had the worst year so far. It's the favourite tree of our local scummy fox, who has dug it out of its pot and tossed around the garden, bare rooted, on no less than three occasions in the last month. I honestly thought the poor thing was done for after that abuse, but though it looks slightly battered I think it's actually grown a bit...
