Here is Acer palmatum 'Sagara nishiki'. In growing this small, vaiegated cultivar some shade is required.

    'Sagara nishiki' 04'

Here is my small 'Sagara nishiki'this season. It is still in the same full gallon container located in a lot of shade but it has shown a lot more variegation this year. Photo made 5-7-04.

I have experienced a lot of die back on branches of my Sagara nishiki over the years. The pictures below are of a tree that is about 15 years old.

This tree is in full sun at the nursery (at the moment) and really shows some nice variegation. I suppose it will need to be moved under the shade cloth soon but so far it has taken the heat pretty well. Picture taken on 6-30-07.

Not a strong grower here, seems to send out a few overly long branches each year, while most branches grow slowly and are twiggy. Needs shade , probably more than it has now, to avoid scorch and has a fair amount of dieback each year. Has been in the ground for 3 years, before coming from a rootbound nursery box and where it had been suffering exposed to full sun for at least 3 years. It's improving slowly and may not be a good representative of the cultivar. Can likely stand some pruning soon to prevent snow damage. Pic taken July 04/2007

As Gomero has pointed out, Sagara nishiki follows the same color pattern as Nishiki Gasane and is similar in many ways. I view my Sagara Nishiki as quite special. It is not a showy cultivar, but it has many subtle attributes. It leafs out normally in yellow and green with a blush of pink, and in late spring develops a rugose texture to the leaves, which are by then mottled yellow and green. It's a lovely cultivar which I grow in semi-shade under a canopy of madrone trees where it performs well. This photo was taken April 18, 2008.

This is the first year I've actually noticed the pinkish orange blush on the spring growth. Have yet to see much of the variegated edged pattern on the leaves as shown in others photos. Pics taken May 6/08.

This photo was taken May 20th. My Sagara Nishiki was about 4 years old when I purchased it 5 years ago. Against all odds, it has performed really well in the wettest and darkest location in my garden. It receives very little filtered light, but it appears to thrive in this location. Go figure.

I find the color of this tree to be very unique. I find it does have dieback. The fall color is still my favortie for the tree

Really enjoying this one! I love the shiny yellow variegation- it's understated, but impressive on closer inspection.
