a rose?

    Looks peony-like to me.

    I agree. However it is woody and the leaves are not lobed. Very little info on peonies except closeups of the flowers. The sepals on these flowers remind me of Crataegus which might be confusing me.

    Except for the buds being so round it looks a bit like Hybiscus syricus
