what maple and oak tree's

    Manitoba Maple (Acer negundo)
    Amur Maple (Acer ginnala - caution, may be invasive)

    Oaks:
    Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa)

    To give you an idea of what can be grown around Edmonton, I suggest two things:

    1) Visiting the Devonian Botanic Garden

    2) Browsing through the catalogue of Jeffries Nursery - excellent info in the catalogue about the plants. Zone 2 will certainly work, some of the zone 3s depend on your local microclimatic situation.

    acer Rubrum=red maple many cultivar avaible(i have october Glory)Scanlon etc.
    Quercus rubra =red oak,if you have low ph is beautiful Splendens

    Quercus mongolica (Mongolian Oak) is hardy to zone 3. I don't know about Z2, but U of North Dakota has trialed it and reports as being similar to Bur Oak in performance. There's a very nice specimen at the U of Minnesota arb that was planted in early 60's and is about 35'.
