These are photos of the Accolades at Comox and Chilco at the minipark shot today. I was too late to get a good shot in the minipark. I'll try again tomorrow.

The first photo is another shot of the Accolades on Chilco but looking toward Nelson. The next photo is of a cherry trying to stay alive. It's at the end of comox, in Stanley park by the parking lot and across from the tennis courts.
As a note; looking into Stanley Park from Nelson there are some large cherries just starting to bud. Sorry, no photos today of them. My memory card ran out.

Well, they're open and I took photos, because those ones on Georgia between Bute and Jervis, both ends of the block, used to be nice trees and now they've been chopped back and look terrible. You can see what they used to look like in postings #34 and #36 last photo.

Okay. Here are some west end trees. Most are in Stanely Park.
The first are some slender,dramatic trees in Comox Street.
They might be Somei-Yoshino.

The Accolades at Chilco mini-park are dropping their blossoms.

I'm not certain about this tree as I couldn't get to the blossoms.
It's on the park path that runs up the west side of Stanley Park,
near the alley behind Comox.


Going into the park there are 3 trees near the Nelson Street entrance parking lot.
They start at the corner of the tennis court and there are 2 more north of there.
I know they are Akebonos because, I learned at the workshop, they have an extra petal that curls inward.


There is a massive tree near the Park Drive entrance. There is a footpath that heads down to the lagoon. Face the sign and on the other side of the road is the footpath. It might be a Pandora. Well worth a look. There is a bamboo grove nearby.


Before I crash this posting, there is one more. It's in the back of 2090 Barclay.

Stoneangel, you're into confusing single whites territory already! See the What single white cherries? Early mid-season thread. There's at least one old Pandora and maybe a Japanese Hill Cherry (not in our book) that come out before the Somei-yoshinos. And one that I keep posting each year with no guesses at all.

It's helpful to know they're out now, so we'll definitely go see them on our walk on Sunday (see Downtown Cherry Blossom Walk, March 7, 2010, Vancouver BC)

My Somei-yoshino is the same tree as your single - white. I lucked out in finding some blossoms on the ground. So is this the unidentified tree?
There are no hairs on the pedicels. Hmm.....starting to get in over my head.

The pendula at Alexandra Park is in bloom. There is also a pic from under the tree. I was struck by the unusual shape of the blossoms. Sorry about the quality of this shot.



But the Accolades at the Aquatic Centre on Beach are finishing up.

They're some sort of Photinia. We have a lot of them. I used to like them, but now that I'm into cherries, I think they overshadow the delicate spring blossoms. I do like them when they're allowed to flower. The Wikipedia article has a photo of one in bloom and a google search brings up some photos with lots of red leaves.

This area in Nelson Park on Comox between Thurlow and Bute is going to be a nice Hanami spot (Japanese term for picnicking with friends and family under the cherry trees) when these trees get a bit bigger. We don't have an official festival this year, but we're featuring Hanami parks on the festival's website (vcbf.ca)

There is a nice little stand of Akebono trees in Stanley park. It's near the underpass, across from the Chapel on Georgia.

These are at Georgia and (I believe) Chilco. FYI-If you want to see how these and other cherry trees look in the summer, check them out on google earth. Those photos were taken in the summer.

I thought for sure these 'Shirotae' on Comox east of Jervis had been posted, but I couldn't find them, so here they are. One is at least 50% in bloom and the other not as much, but they're very noticeable when you drive by them. [Edited 2011oct04 by wcutler] I've corrected the location; note that the mouse-over location is off by a block. Thank you gmaps street view.


The 'Takasago' trees lining Comox from Thurlow to Stanley Park are starting to bloom.


The four blocks of 'Rancho' on Davie west of Burrard (and continuing for a few blocks east of Burrard into the Downtown neighbourhood) have a lot of blossoms. I don't know how Joseph Lin does his blossom percentages. I'd have to say something like 50% of the trees have 80% of their blossoms open on the lower 50% of the tree, with 5% chance of getting any of them to show up in a nice street photo. I don't see the ones taken over by the P. avium rootstock - it looks like those have been replaced by youngsters.

COMOX STREET

The Takasagos that run along Comox from Denman to the park are open.



These are the same trees about 4 days later.



Then there's a large (white) Sweet Cherry in the 1800 block of Comox, next to a Takasago. I couldn't find any blossoms laying around. However did get a photo of the Takasago blossom.


Just east of the Chilco miniPark I spied this delicate, little Shidare Yoshino. [edited by wcutler 20110115: we decided recently to call this 'Sendai-shidare']

PENDRELL

I think these are Mikuruma-gaeshi.



These Akebonos are on the same street (pendrell) looking toward the Park office.



These Akebonos are on Pendrell near Denman. As you can see they are almost done. Also, an interesting graft.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, that's not in bloom yet, it's a sweet cherry, Prunus avium.

I went to Stanley Park to check on the line of 'Snow Goose' planted last year along the path at Ceperley Meadow. They're doing fine - should be out next week.


The 'Shirotae' at Lost Lagoon are almost in full bloom. A little further along are two 'Shirotae' planted last year on the lagoon side of the path with only a few blossoms open (not pictured).


I was hoping the Rose Garden 'Akebono' would hold off till Easter (for my annual Easter Parade cherry walk), but they're in full bloom now.


The 'Rancho' are looking superbo at Malkin Bowl. Or at least they're in bloom.


'Shirotae' at the Japanese Memorial near the Aquarium are in full bloom - I was also hoping they'd be out for Easter.


There are several 'Akebono' in Devonian Park, between Stanley Park and the Bayshore Hotel. These people from Vernon were enjoying the blossoms.

The Takasagos on Comox from Denman to the park are fully opened now. They look lovely interspersed with the red plum leaves.

'Atsumori', not really out but plenty enough blossoms to take photos and get an idea of what it looks like; to the right of the golf course entrance

'Snow Goose', along Ceperley Meadow path to Lost Lagoon, some trees 90%
'Rancho', past the lawn bowling along the road, two trees
'Mikuruma-gaeshi' on Pendrell
One 'Kanzan' blossom! Some buds are 1cm
'Ichiyo' behind McDonald's on Cardero at Davie, lots of blossoms

 

Re: West End/Stanley Park - a dozen cultivars in bloom

OK, some photos from yesterday, and the suggested route if you want to do a walk to see a dozen cultivars in one and a half hours. I'm splitting this into two postings, as I just lost all my uploaded photos, so maybe it will work better.

Start at Comox and Cardero. In front of the building I used to live in at 1601 Comox are a 'Shirofugen' not in bloom yet, and a 'Spire' and 'Takasago', both in bloom. The 'Spire' makes for an ungainly-looking arrangement. Along the side of the building is another 'Shirofugen'.

Walk west toward the park. There will be two or three 'Takasago' on most blocks. I had the address of the 'Shidare-yoshino' wrong yesterday, will correct it when I'm finished this. And you can correct the name too. That's what I'm calling it until someone else comes up with a better name. There are two of them, private plantings at 1937 Comox, so west of Gilford, north side.



If you want to see two 'Tai Haku', they are one block north on Nelson, in the same block, south side. Come back to Comox and continue walking toward the park. At the last building on the right, bordering the right side of the lot are three or four 'Shirotae' pictured here.


As you enter the park off Comox, right in front of you is some sort of hill cherry. Douglas Justice asked for close-up photos a year or two ago, so if you have your ladder with you, you can use it to get blossom photos. Or maybe Douglas doesn't need any more photos of these - I think he's given up on identifying all these hill cherries around town.


On the way to the golf course, you can see (the heronry, and then beyond that) two 'Rancho' along the road leading out of the park on Beach Ave. They're opposite the parking lot for Ceperley Playground.
