A neighbor gave us this shrub from her garden, but didn't know its name. It flowers in mid-spring and, as I recall, its flowers are dark pinkish. Species/variety anyone?
Looks evergreen to me. I was thinking Arbutus unedo, or perhaps Myrica californica, but it isn't quite right for either of then.
Just to give folks here another hint at this one, you list your locale as North Thompson - I assume this means somewhere along the North Thompson River in British Columbia, somewhere around zone 4a to 5a in Canada's Hardiness Zones.
Good guess on the zone - the plant's locale is Barriere, north of Kamloops. Re: Evergreen - it is not as the leaves are turning yellow and dropping. Re: Myrica californica - the leaves of the unknown are close to, but not the same as those of Pacific waxmyrtle website. See http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ldplants/mype5.htm
The leaves definitely look like they may be part of the Prunus clan. I did some searching of google's leaf/plant images and have tentatively picked Prunus tenella (dwarf Russian flowering almond). I'll have to wait till spring to see if the flowers match well with that species...
