tricot lilac sprout? What causes this?

    So far I've managed to get two seeds from my mom's old lilac bush to germinate (I wasn't expecting any, since I tried last summer and nothing) One came up a few days after the first sprout (shown), and with three seed leaves. I'm just curious about this phenomenon.


    *edit: Here's a pic of it with its first leaves. So cute!!

    Not that rare to find 'tricot' seedlings of dicot plants, probably some very minor genetic mutation. The plant will likely grow normally.

    Thanks, I was just curious to know if anyone knows any specifics about the mutation. I figure here would be the best place to look.
