Phyllostachys bambusoides (Japanese Timber bamboo) is shooting again as it does this time of year. Some of these new culms should be about 30' when they've max'd out.

    Cheers, LPN.

    Very nice Barry.
Mine had just started to shoot when I was home last weekend. A few culms look as if they are growing horizontally.

Howdy Brian, and welcome aboard the UBC botanical forum.
Those horizontal shoots are likely rhizomes than are growing along the surface. Easy to snap off the unwanted ones. This one still has a ways to go to gather a full head of steam. Ray and I did a bamboo dig of this stuff back in '99 and this is one of the sections from that dig.
On a side note, I'd like to pop into Tofino sometime in July. I also have a gardening friend in Pt. Alberni I'd stop in to see as well. My guess is everthing's humming along nicely there?

    Cheers, Barrie.

    Barry,
The clump that I have also came from Ray (last year).

I welcome your visit anytime. However, I am working in Ottawa until the end of July. Maybe, we could coordinate at time when I am there.

Can you send me an e-mail? I don't have my full address list on the laptop.

Those shoots look great! I look forwards to owning enough acreage to grow more bamboos when I retire!
