'Kanzan' in full glorious bloom on E28th , east and west of Penticton.

 

The Ukon trees along south side of E. 15th Avenue, east of Renfrew in full bloom at April 23, 2019. Some blossoms already showing red-eye centres.

 

Two Shirofugen trees on E. 16th, one on each side of Lillooet, are in full bloom at April 23, 2019.


They look deceptively good from a distance, but are older trees, spreading broad at the top (the canopy) and thick at the bottom (worn trunk)—the unmistakable signs of age in both trees and humans.

 

@Willard and I saw this 'Kanzan' arch on 38th from Nanaimo to Clarendon two years ago, but it's not like we remember each street of these trees. Yesterday, we had a long agenda, but when we passed by these, we drove around the block to drive through them.

 

I was driving east on 22nd, had to drive around the block to check out some 'Shiro-fugen' trees on Cassiar to the south. There are three somewhat young ones on the west side of Cassiar at 22nd, and a block of them on the east side of Cassiar south from 23rd.



The block of 23rd from Skeena to Cassiar seems to be 'Akebono' on both sides. First photo is from Skeena.


Back to Cassiar, at 23rd to 22nd are three big old 'Kanzan' and then three big old avium, sweet cherries, tall enough that I thought avium 'Plena', but they're not.

 

The 'Kanzan' triple row on Rupert, from 12th to 29th, is surely finished by now, but I just saw an impressive aerial view on Facebook posted by the Georgia Strait (newspaper). New planting of cherry trees on both sides of Penticton, from E. 22nd to E. 23rd. Shirotae in bloom at April 10, 2020. Along side one Rancho, and two other trees which haven't opened yet.

 

Shirotae just past peak bloom in Melbourne Park (Vanness and Melbourne) at April 13, 2020. Akebono is finishing.

 

With Akebono finishing, the lone Tai-haku in Melbourne Park is in full expansive bloom at April 13, 2020. You can hardly tell there is a little Shirotae cowering under its span at the right. In last photo, Tai-haku blossoms on left, Shirotae on right.

I think this is the best-looking of this cultivar posted this year.

 

Going along E. 20th, the thought idly passes through your mind: that looks pretty good for a Takasago. That's because it's not Takasago. Renfrew's first Mikuruma-gaeshi! In full bloom at 3153 E. 2oth (north side, between Lillooet and Windermere) April 15, 2020.

Two Ama-no-gawa trees in front yard on east side of Rupert where E. 16th would be if not stopped by the Rupert street meridian. In bloom April 19, 2020.

 

Right on the meridian at Rupert and E. 16th, a Shirt-fugen has obviously been accidentally planted with the Kanzan. In bloom at April 16, 2020.

 

Six Shiro-fugen trees in front of the Broadway Church (SE Broadway and Slocan) are blooming at April 19, 2020.

 

The eleven Shiro-fugen trees on the west side of Rupert, south of E. Broadway are in bloom at April 19, 2020.

 

Kiku-shidare in bloom on north side of E. 15th, east of Lillooet at April 19, 2020. Looks like it's being taken care of, with the tulips.

 

Although this Shiro-fugen has a wide, mature span, it can't be good for a tree to have that growth right in its middle. Another pruning event gone wrong. On E. 16, east of Lillooet at April 19, 2020.

 

The two new Shirotae trees on the west side of Lillooet, south of E. 16 are full of red centres as they finish their bloom at April 19, 2020.

 

The Shiro-fugen trees on both sides of E. 27th, from Nanaimo to Penticton, are in bloom at April 21, 2020.
