I have just planted some 'long cane' Tulameen mid-July fruiting raspberries. The general rule when planting raspberries is to cut down to 12" after planting. However, as these have come as 'long cane' already 5 ft high, does the general rule still apply. I cannot see that it would be sensible to cut them back to 12". The producers' write up says "They are shipped to customers as a 'long cane' which will produce fruit in the first year of planting" Any advice greatly appreciately. Thanks.
They may indeed fruit on the long canes, but will these newly planted plants have enough energy to establish a root system, push primocanes for next summer's fruit, and bear fruit on the long canes? In my experience, it is gratifying to get fruit the first year, but you may pay for it in weaker canes/smaller crops in the next few years. And Tulameen are worth waiting for!
