Post Burn Life

    I thought this was a pretty awesome picture of a mushroom growing out of the side of a dead, fire killed ponderosa pine on the Payette National Forest at about 5,900 feet in the South Fork of the Salmon River watershed. I am not a mushroom guy so I don't know what genus it is ... maybe Amanita? This forest burns regularly and the plant life and fungi observed afterwards is incredible.

    Looks like a pholiota to me. Not sure what species though as I don't have any books with me.

    I agree that it looks like a Pholiota. A quick search of the Web turned up Pholiota adiposa as the closest in appearance, although it is supposed to grow on Beech trees.
