I just got a 'Pendula Julian' from Buchholz, but I can only find info on 'Pendulum Julian'.

    What is the deal?

The Vertrees bible says 'Pendulum' as well. Hard to argue there. Maybe the Buchholz tag is a typo.

Agreed, I believe it was once common place to add pendula/pendulum to weeping cultivars, and the correct latinized spelling would put the "um" if the genus/species had "um" in it. I don't quite know the details, but since Palmatum has "um" any latinized cultivar name should also have the "um" in it. Examples inclued aureum, atropurpureum, dissectum etc.

'Pendula Julian' from a West Coast
    nursery source is correct. The
    Vertrees second edition book does
indeed list this Maple by this name,
as it should be. 'Pendula Julian' is
not a named variant form of 'Pendulum'
which is a Maple from Europe. Mr.
Wada in his 1938 Yokohama nursery
catalog listed eight known forms of
Pendulum, one of which leafs out
in the Spring with palmate leaves
and with advent of the Summer
new growth we see that new growth
    have dissectum leaves.

What may surprise a few people is
that 'Pendula Julian' grown from seed
from grafted plants yields a high number
of seedlings which are, close to being
exact, true to type depending on the
rootstock. We do not see that with
the European Maple. True form 'Pendula
Julian' is a nigrum group red. Not to be
confused with that other 'Pendulum' Maple
which is an atropurpureum group red, thus
Mr. Vertrees in the second edition book
cites the Japanese form from Wada
    'Pendulum angustilobum atropurpureum'
in his book along with 'Pendula Julian'
as separate form red dissectums - page
    187.

Thanks as usual for clearing that up Jim, I learn something everyday. Whoever named it wasn't following the "rules", or the "trend" perhaps.

This little venture back to the 2nd edition has also brought to my attention a couple of old mislabeled trees that continue to cook my noodle.
