Rhododendrons: New shoots but no flower buds

I need your help.

I have heard that in the fall you (dead head) your Rhodo blossoms and in the spring the buds will come back. So I have done this however now I am only getting new shoots and no blossoms at all. What should I have done or not have done.

 

Overwintering buds set each summer at ends of new shoots of that year. When you deadhead these shoots are coming from around and just below the spent flowerhead (as well as the ends of shoots that didn't flower that year). Don't break these off.

 

Deadheading is done right after a rhododendron finishes blooming, usually in spring; if you deadhead in the fall, you remove the following year's flower buds, read this.
