I have a Magnolia figo (syn. Michelia figo) that's currently loaded with flower buds in various stages of bloom. The tree had been severely pruned in Sept 2017 to nearly bare branches. Prior to this the tree produced flowers sparingly. I'm wondering if a severe pruning forces the tree to flower abundantly. Could it be that this species produces flowers only on new wood, which perhaps may explain what's happening?

The tree is containerized and is growing indoors in an enclosed balcony with a free inflow of outside air.
