This is what the Mountain Cherry likes: first a cold spell; then lots of space, sun and worshippers at its feet. Yama-zakura in full bloom in Killarney Park (east side of Raleigh and E. 47th) at April 12, 2021. In deference to her dignity, I have not included a picture of the woman carrying a step-stool along with her camera.

The beautiful Yae-beni-shidare, across the street from Killarney Park, at the corner of Raleigh and Coleridge, is starting its bloom at April 12, 2021.

A row of Takasago are in full bloom now, located from 49th to 51th Ave. on Vivian street. Can't imagine how beautiful the late stage blossoms of Takasago still are. They are very health , even still covered with moss on all of the branches.
Photo taken by Sunny Chen and Janice on 4/20.

Seven Akebono are going out of the season on 3280 Rosemont Dr.. The flowers looked like reddish bells on the tree. I didn't realize the last stage of Akebono are beautiful too, on 4/20.

It's very strange. A lot of the trees are a lot more pink than I remember - usually, I guess when it's later, the petals drop off before going so pink. I've noticed 'Takasago' still with all their flowers, but very pink. Isn't it really unusual to still have all these flowers still on 'Akebono' when 'Shiro-fugen' are out?

The third photo just above looks very much like one @Yong posted at Coquitlam. But in hers, the rest of the group of trees looked very different from that one tree.

I remember being disappointed in how pruned was this 'Yae-beni-shidare' at Raleigh and Coleridge, across from Killarney Community Centre, but it looked lovely from a distance last week. I was supposed to be paying attention to the tour put on by VCBF and the Park Board, so I didn't get to do more than take this not very satisfactory quick snapshot.

The underbrush has been cleared away, so the beautiful Yae-beni-shidare, across the street from Killarney Park, at the corner of Raleigh and Coleridge, is in bloom at April 20, 2023. The pink cascade is a few feet from touching the street, so it looks very free and unpruned.

The two trees of 'Somei-Yoshino' in Killarney Park (Raleigh and E. 47) are past peak bloom at April 20, 2023. Red eyes (rose stain in centre), green leaves—won't be long before petal fall and the illustration of the ephemerality of beauty.

Yama-zakura is in full bloom at Killarney Park (east side of Raleigh and E. 47th) on April 20, 2023.

The first flower shot show red bud scales and the hairless calyx and stems (remember scouts, Wendy is big on hairs "pubescence"). The second flower shot show the emergent copper-brown leaves with serrated edges and long tips. The only other location for Yama-sakura is at VanDusen, so keep a lookout for a third one.

    20230420_ Yama_Raleigh E. 47_Eng_7829.jpeg 20230420_ Yama_Raleigh E. 47_Eng_7834.jpeg 20230420_ Yama_Raleigh E. 47_Eng_7830.jpeg

It's not hard to miss the Yama-sakura because (first photo below) it is hidden behind the two 'Somei-Yoshino' trees and in a view in front of the two (2nd photo below) it has noticeably lopped-off branches giving it an easily ignorable look.

    20230420_ SYoshinoYama_Raleigh E. 47_Eng_7839.jpeg 20230420_ Yama_Raleigh E. 47_Eng_7836.jpeg

Also note this: as showing in the first flower photo, Yama-zakura is the one sakura with the sepals lifting off, not clasping, the calyx—reminiscent of the "recurved sepals" of Prunus avium (Ornamental Cherries of Vancouver, p. 47).

The 'Takasago' trees on the east side of Vivian street, running south of E. 49th are in full bloom at April 21, 2023.

    20230421_Takasago_VivianE49_Eng_7847.jpeg 20230421_Takasago_VivianE49_Eng_7850.jpeg 20230421_Takasago_VivianE49_Eng_7849.jpeg 20230421_Takasago_VivianE49_Eng_7848.jpeg

Despite appearing to have all the branches wrapped in moss and obvious fault lines in the trunks, they are putting on a strong floral display.

I like that branch mimicking the lines of the handrail.
