    Bought a super new book...
"Identification of Trees and Shrubs in Winter using Buds and Twigs"
    ..by Bernd Schutz.
Full of exquisite hand drawn illustrations.
I decided I needed to swot up on my winter id of UK trees.

    But nothing is ever easy.
Went to Scone Palace in Perthshire and took clear pics of the buds /leaf scars of this tree.
    They don't match the book.
Now I have lost confidence and am beginning to doubt my id.
I will first post the bud/scars.
(Later I can add the leaves which were still on the tree.)
Based solely on buds what do others think this is?

I'm so excited that I thought it was a walnut before I noticed that you'd included a habit photo, I can't tell you. I'm just posting to mention that species trees are not clones, so there are variations to be expected. And Ron B has mentioned on other threads how easily walnuts cross.
You didn't say it was a walnut at the start - were you even questioning that?

    Is it Juglans Mandshurica????
    Please confirm.

    My first thought was Walnut.
But the more I searched the more confused I got and ended with Pterocarya sp
But have seen Pterocarya at Westonbirt Arbotetum complete with label years ago and can well remember the blinking forest of suckers.
So rather than getting bogged down under a heap of books I thought I would ask the experts.

Scone Palace is where Kings of Scotland were crowned in the past.

    scone palace - Google Search

They have a Pinetum with many original trees grown from seeds sent back by David Douglas in 1826..inc Pseudotsuga menziesii...Douglas fir.
Several trees have been planted by visiting Royalty/dignitaries
